Editorial review:

Incredible landmark Menger Hotel is across the street from the Alamo and is known for having ghosts haunting some of the rooms. The public spaces are classy, elegant, and charming, as is the incredible bar where Teddy Roosevelt used to go. The service and food are mediocre, though.

Verified Reviews:

  • Just across the road to the river walk - Complementary coffee at breakfast time - Air conditioner was loud, but functional
  • Fitness room was also extremely limited - Room was big and comfy - Bathrooms were very clean
  • Parking is $19 a day - Beds were extremely hard - Location is perfect
  • Free high speed internet - Rooms are decent - Breakfast in the courtyard is reasonable and delicious
  • Pool is chilly - Would definitely stay again - There is a hot tub - Location couldn't be better next to the alamo

Smelled like heavy smoke all the time.

I like the sense of history. I loved all the photos placed all around, showing the building before renovations, and historical figures that stayed there.

Our room had a very strange odor that they must have been aware of, seeing how there was an ionic breeze type machine to purify the air on the floor. The roomwas clean, but the bed was a little stiff for my taste.

Reasonable cost, no large problem, and kind staff.

Many small problems botherd me. Good location, but no exit to southward rivercenter. Tv was misplugged into a special outlet for a lamp which can be switched on/off by a wall switch, then I spent 1 hour to watch tv. A coffee maker with 3pin plug was eqquipped on a desk, but there is no 3pin outlet nearby. A special bath tub plug with a switch was eqquipped, but no instruction. There is no sign to the location of ice machine.

I loved seeing the building. It was absolutly beautiful and had a rich history. I also enjoyed the ghost stories which made the stay a little more exciting.

I didnt like that the room did not cool down, espesially on a hot day, it would have been nice for the room to be cool. Also, the beds were a little uncomfortable.

The price and closeness to everything

The slowness of staff to respond to a concern about the vanity light not working. Contact was made with the hotel the evening of our arrival but it was not repaired until two days later only a few hours before we departed. The use of the vanity light was important for applying our makeup, etc.

I love the cleaniness of the hotel. Also, I like that it was next door to the Riverwalk Mall. Great location for shopping and restaurants.

The staff at The Menger was verry attentive, the Continental Room sunday brunch was excellent, and the hotel itsself was absolutely beautiful.

We couldn't get a coffie in the bar at 11 P.M. and the pool side service was slow, and there were giant dust bunnies on the pipes over head in our room, but if you dimmed the lights they were fine!

    the old time charm.

    Sorry, we enjoyed it all.

    Staff was friendly and helpful.

Toilet seemed to be leaking water along the bottom. We had hoped to use the sauna, but the spa is apparently unavailable on the weekends. Also, going to the pool is problematic. We confronted the following logic problem when going to and from the pool: (1) you can't take your towels from the room to the pool; (2) you can't take towels from the pool to your room;(3) you can't walk through the lobby in a wet suit; and (4) there is no changing room by the pool. We had to break rule #3 in order to go swimming and not wait all night for our suits to dry.

Great hotel, in service for at least 100 years.Located in the heart of San Antonio. Would stay again. Great history, near the riverwalk and many wonderful restaurants.

An old hotel with much charm. So you don't get the spiffy new tile floors and maybe the water temperature can be a bit of an adventure. Staff is friendly, efficient, and very appreciative of their work environment. All in all a classic hotel.

The staff here was very friendly. Beds were comfy and clean. Bathroom floor needed a little help in the cleanliness part (they missed the corners where things tend to collect). Since this was right across the street from the Alamo (the street however was semi traffic free and quiet) and around the corner of the Riverwalk and mall this made it the perfect location! The pool was nice and well kept with towels provided for you at poolside. Don't forget they provide free water to guests at the valet area! If i were to go to San Antonio again I would definitely stay here! P.S. - they say its the 3rd most haunted hotel in the US and #1 in Texas! The story/history of the hotel is great!

From booking to valet parking staff, check in through coffee and check out, the staff is courteous and efficient, the hotel immaculate and beautiful. But first and formost, The Menger is historical. My father took us to the Menger in the 50's and 60'S. His grandfather, John W. "bet a million" Gates stayed at the Menger during his time in San Antonio when he brought the first barbed wire to the cattle industry in 1877, the wire that he touted as "Lighter than air, stronger than whiskey and cheaper than dirt!" The Menger is Texas.
